In this area, extremely diverse in its geography, ecology, and culture, an equally diverse array of orchids occur, numbering about 1400 species in 174 genera. Thailand has the largest number of orchid species with some 1100 species in 162 genera recorded while Laos is a less explored country and has only 335 orchid species in 85 genera recorded from there. Cambodia has even less recorded with only 164 species in 61 genera. Vietnam has 751 species in 142 genera recorded.
